Kakabeka Falls Upsala The highlight of your visit to this picturesque town is of course, the nearby waterfall in Kakabeka Falls Provincial Park. Kakabeka Falls is one of the largest waterfalls in Northern Ontario at 234 feet in width with a vertical drop of 131 feet. The gorge at the bottom of the falls has fossils over 2 billion years old and the site is a good example of just how beautiful Northwestern Ontario really is. Approximately 90 miles west of Thunder Bay is the small community of Upsala. Established in 1882, Upsala was an important railway community acting as a fuel and water stop for trains travelling on the then newly constructed Canadian Pacific Railway system. Kakabeka Falls offers travelers a great variety of products and services along with great hospitality. Have a bite to eat at the local restaurants, stay at several hotels or motels in town and shop at some of the nicest souvenir and gift shops to be found anywhere in Northwestern Ontario. These stores offer a great selection of items - many unique to the area. Kakabeka Falls is a great jumping-off point for fishing, hunting or outdoor adventures and is one of the nicest small communities in the Sunset Country region. The Upsala area is located in prime fishing country and is situated just north of the famous Lac des Mille Lacs - the "Lake of 1000 Lakes". Lac des Mille Lacs itself was an important fur trade waterway and today, has many fine fishing and hunting resorts located along its shores. A short drive northwest on the Trans Canada Highway, brings you to the Graham Road. This takes you to the community of Graham and to great fishing lakes such as Wawang and Pakashkan.
