2015 Ontario's Sunset Country Travel Guide 2015 | Page 46

Everyone loves a party and in Sunset Country, we love to party it up year round. No matter what community you are visiting or passing through, there is likely some event or possibly a major festival going on. Expect fireworks on July 1st to celebrate Canada Day. The variety of things we celebrate is really quite incredible so if you are an aviation enthusiast, the Norseman Festival in Red Lake is something you should check out. If you love music, Ear Falls has the Trout Forest Music Festival and Kenora has Harbourfest. Two of the most popular festivals in the region are the Sioux Lookout Blueberry Festival or Moosefest in Dryden. Enjoy Railroad Daze in Rainy River, the Black Fly Festival in Pickle Lake, the Sioux Narrows Arts Festival, and both Atikokan and Ignace celebrate the fabulous story of the White Otter Castle with a summer festival. Racing enthusiasts will love the races at the Emo Speedway. Make sure you check at least one of these events out! Our new Sunset Country mobile app lists every event and festival so use it to discover what is on at any one time. Don’t miss the many fishing tournaments which often also include parades and concerts. Check out the events listing on page 50-51 and the fishing tournaments on page 22. From this sign just off the Trans-Canada Highway all streams flow north into the Arctic Ocean. Beautiful dancing at the Eagle Lake Powwow. From Husky the Muskie in Kenora, to Max the Moose in Dryden to the Norseman in Red Lake, these monuments are worth stopping for. In many cases, there is a plaque telling the story of how the monument was created. In fact, in addition to the ones listed above we encourage you to visit others such as the Norlund Chapel in Emo, the Big Chair in Fort Frances, the canoeist in Atikokan, the float plane in Ignace or the Inukshuk or Bigfoot in Vermilion Bay to name a few.
