Waterfalls
One of the most popular past times for
travelers wherever they may be is to look
for and photograph waterfalls. With so
many waterways we are bound to have
several of these and in fact, Sunset
Country has the “Niagara of the North” –
Kakabeka Falls located just west of
Thunder Bay in the small town of the same
name.
Other waterfalls of significance include
Little Falls in Atikokan, Raleigh Falls in
Ignace, Nestor Falls in (where else) the
Township of Nestor Falls, Rushing River
Provincial Park near Kenora, and Perrault
Spectacular wildlife viewing opportunities.
Falls cascading between Perrault and
Wabaskang Lakes. If you are into a hike,
walk to the Middle Falls in Pigeon River
Provincial Park just north of the
Canada/US border.
This is by no means an all-inclusive list of
course so ask at the local travel
information centre in the community you
are visiting for all the sights to see.
There are also many waterfalls on remote
lakes in the region. Your outfitter or lodge
will be sure to point them to you.

Wildlife Viewing
It is pretty hard to beat the Sunset Country
region when it comes to wildlife viewing.
Our vast boreal forests harbor many
creatures the most majestic being moose,
whitetail deer and bear but there are also
many smaller mammals including wolves,
foxes, martens, wolverines and lynx. The
key thing to remember is to always have a
camera ready so you don’t miss that
perfect shot.
If you’re a birder then boy are you going to
love it in Sunset Country! The boreal forest
is the summer nesting grounds for
hundreds of species of songbirds, waterfowl,
owls and the raptor species especially bald
eagles, hawks and falcons. Any cruise on a
lake in the southern part of the region will
result in sightings of loons, white pelicans
and if you are lucky, swans.
The Rainy River region is probably the
best for birders with over 300 species of
birds. Just 18km northwest of the Town of
Rainy River at the mouth of the Rainy
River is the world-renowned Sable Island,
home of the permanent breeding
population of the endangered piping
plover.
