2015 Ontario's Sunset Country Travel Guide 2015 | Page 16
The Rainy River Region of Sunset Country
borders the United States and from a
fishing perspective, the action starts as
soon as you cross the border. Not only
does this region include Rainy Lake and
its incredible fishery, it also has countless
smaller lakes that offer you every species
of fish Sunset Country has to offer. Catch
loads of walleye, pike, muskie, bass, trout,
crappie and perch – they can all be found
here! Certainly the region’s best bass
fishing may be located in this part of
Sunset Country and many lakes have big
walleye – up to 30 inches or more –
swimming in the depths.
Atikokan, Fort Frances, Emo, Morson and
the Town of Rainy River are the
communities where you can get all the
supplies you require before heading out to
the lodge. In fact, Fort Frances across the
river from International Falls, MN and
Rainy River across the river from
Baudette, MN are where most folks who
drive here from the USA cross at. The
Rainy River Region is huge and contains
the jewel that is Quetico Provincial Park
near Atikokan. If you want to fish near
the Canada/USA border, then the Rainy
River Region is for you.
At the most easterly extent of the Rainy
River Region is the City of Thunder Bay,
Ontario. With its international airport,
including direct flights from Chicago on
United Airlines, it is a great choice for
those who want a world class fishing trip
but don’t have the time to drive here and
back home again. For those thinking of
coming up from Southern Ontario, Porter
Airlines, WestJet, and Air Canada also
have several daily flights out of Toronto.
Leave the big smoke in the morning and
be fishing on a wilderness lake that
afternoon!

Sunsets just don’t get any better than those in Sunset Country.
