you earn points. I think he is really going to help us
in our program, and we look forward to working with
him and watching him improve.”
Hobgarski was a top European recruit and has
demonstrated high-level experience on the court.
“Chris is a powerful player and he can hit some
exciting shots,” McDermott said. “He has lots of
experience playing back home in Germany, and
traveling quite a bit. His experience will help us.”
The Huskers will need to lean on their cumulative
experiences against a challenging schedule,
especially in the Big Ten. Last season, Ohio State,
Illinois, Michigan, Penn State and Purdue advanced
to the NCAA Tournament with the Buckeyes and Illini
moving on to the Sweet 16.
This season, OSU enters the spring ranked No. 5
nationally, while Illinois is No. 11. Penn State (26),
Northwestern (34), Michigan (43), Purdue (48),
Minnesota (49), Michigan State (63), Indiana (65)
give the Big Ten nine teams ranked in the top 65 in
the ITA national rankings entering the 2015 spring
campaign.
The Huskers kick off the season by facing No. 25
Oklahoma State on Jan. 17, before facing No. 46
Drake on Jan. 30. NU’s non-conference battles with
ranked teams continue at No. 44 Oregon on Feb.
20, before facing No. 56 Santa Clara the next day in
Eugene, Ore.
Overall, Nebraska will play 13 of its 23 regularseason matches against top-65 teams.
“We have a really good schedule. It could put us in
a position to finish in the top 30 or 40 in the country
and make it to the NCAAs. The opportunity is there
for our team,” McDermott said. ”If we work hard and
get a few wins and upset a few teams, we are capable
of making the NCAA Tournament at the end of the
year.”
