Miro House It was an honour to be elected as this year’s Miro House Leaders by our peers and teachers. The 2015 year began for Miro House at Year 13 camp which was held out at Riverbend. Each of the houses worked together in various activities and had to prepare a skit involving the school song and haka over two days. This was where Miro kicked off with a bang winning the Year 13 skit alongside some activities of the wheelbarrow race and human fooseball. This was an astonishingly amusing way to start the year because we all came together and worked well as a team. Our journey continued well for Miro when we came a very close second at the swimming sports in February. Here we had the chance for the top swimmers to shine and as a house bond together to participate in all the activities. We also had some wonderful champions- Imke Kitchen in junior girls and Joseph Belcher in intermediate boys. This followed onto the second major house event of athletics, where we had a slight turn around and scraped through with a third place. Our athletes performed to their highest potential and gained help from many of the juniors getting involved. We had outstanding athletes who were champions of their respective year groups, Ethan Snow-Smith, Robert Fridd and Mitch Keip. After these two events the points for the Patu were all even field with the houses. The competitiveness from here on out became stronger in all houses fighting for the Patu. House Netball was the next event which was our strongest as we dominated in this minor event. With the help and coaching of Natalya she pulled us through with some tactics and vigorous trainings to out score the other houses. Here we were out on top by 5 points. Which was when it came time for the drama kids to shine and show us their humour. This lead to the next minor event of Theatresports where we finished with a third only half a point behind second. Thanks to our dedicated juniors and few seniors especially Grace Stephenson who helped out as it was her forte. Here the major event of Kapa Haka came round the corner fast. We had plenty of students involved in this especially yet again our juniors. Many thanks to Yr11 student Joseph Belcher and Natalya for their efforts and organisations of the songs and production to finish with a high standard performance close to other houses to finish with a tough third. We were then blessed with many rugby talents from the boys to come out with a few wins, however the girls struggled with pace. This made us come third equal in the House Touch Rugby event. Our last event of the year is the Army Challenge which becomes Callum’s strength, this event will take place in term 4 before seniors leave, so we hope to achieve a great placing here. As leaders we have learnt to consider other people’s ideas and to be organised and very positive towards our fellow peers. We would like to say a big thank you and send our kind regards to Mr Parry our house tutor who is retiring at the end of the year, Mrs Taylor who goes on maternity leave and to Mrs Gourley who leaves us after a few months. Special thanks to Miss White our leader for all the dedication and amazing things she has done to the Miro family who is moving to Auckland. We have enjoyed our year with many ups and a few downs of house events. Thank you to everyone who took part in events throughout the year we couldn’t have done it without you. All the best for 2016 and hope to hear of Miro receiving the Patu. Regards Natalya Taylor and Callum Wilkie.
