From the Chair
Dear Community,
It is my honor to bring greetings on behalf on of the Denton Juneteenth Celebration Committee! As
we celebrate Juneteenth, let me encourage you to take a moment to reflect on the importance of this
holiday. Personally, I feel an enormous sense of gratitude for our ancestors that gave their lives for
our freedom. Because of their sacrifices, we are able to pursue our dreams.
We have been blessed with great talent this year. I’m humbled to have the opportunity to work with
such great people. Thank you to all the committee members, artists, volunteers, the City of Denton,
Parks Foundation, Parks & Rec Department, MLK Staff, Randee Kingle & H.O.T. FUNDS, Harold
Jackson, Donna Woodfork, the media, the local churches, Tonya Derrick, Cheryl Smith, and the first
responders because without you, this event would not have happened! Next, let me say THANK YOU
to the sponsors, donors, supporters, and vendors for helping us create Unity in the Community. Last,
but not least, I would like to thank you for helping us make this celebration a tremendous success!
Your presence means more than you could imagine.
Let me encourage you to join the committee, because we need your help! Anyone willing to
volunteer, please contact me at [email protected]. Next year will be the 45th Anniversary and we
are anticipating great things. Would you use your gifts and talents to help the Denton Juneteenth
Celebration Committee?
In conclusion, it takes all of us to build “Unity in the Community!” As we depart from this celebration,
let us find ways throughout the year to build and sustain our communities. Thank you for your
participation, time, and use of your talents! I look forward to working with you for the 2016
celebration.
Sincerely,
Cheylon Brown
