What is HEBCAC YO!? In 1999, the HEBCAC Youth Opportunity Center was founded to address the education, counseling, and career development and training needs of out of school youth in East Baltimore. The HEBCAC YO staff also connects youth in need of other services such as housing, family support, and health care with partnering public and community‐based agencies.
This summer something extraordinary happened to me. My work place became my happy place. I had been searching for this feeling for a while now‐ to get up every morning and not only be content with going to work, but to be excited about it. I have experienced this feeling of bliss and excitement everyday this summer because of my internship at HEBCAC YO. It has been a challenging, eye‐opening and extremely rewarding experience. I was very fortunate to have the opportunity to work with staff members who put their heart and soul in the work they do and to meet strong, independent students whom, despite all the curve balls life has thrown at them, continue to work hard towards achieving their goals. I love that being part of HEBCAC YO means being part of a supportive family full of strong and diverse personalities. I love that my students encouraged me to challenge our education system and think of more creative and personalized ways to teach class, like playing hangman to learn about our solar system. I love how my students broadened by perspective and showed me that in order to be a good teacher you need to take the time to ask your students how they are each and everyday because you never know what sort of complications they are dealing with. I’ m leaving this internship with way more than I ever expected to gain and I owe it all to the staff and students at our center. ‐ Bahareh
