Bilkent Erzurum Laboratory School puts great
emphasis on professional development programs
for its teachers. Within this framework, our teachers
are given consistent opportunities for professional
development programs.
Mr. Akın Metli, High School Principal, and Mr. Okan
Önder, IGCSE Coordinator, attended annual Cambridge
Schools Conferences in Dubai, UAE. The conference
had the theme “Education fit for the future: planning
for a changing world” The conference focused on
how teaching, assessment, learning spaces (real and
virtual) and leadership would need to evolve in order
to enhance student learning in the future.
The aim was to provoke discussion about what schools
and teachers can do to improve professional practice,
and to provide ideas that teachers and school leaders
can take away with them. At this influential event, a
community of teachers representing schools from
many countries and contexts had the chance to share
their experience on education.
Questions that were considered during the conference
include:
• How can new media and digital technologies be
best used to support student learning?
• What will future learning spaces look like and
how do we develop these?
• How will assessment for learning practice
develop?
• How will the role of the teacher change?
• What will high stakes summative assessment look
like in the 2020s and what are Cambridge’s plans
for computer-based testing?
• What will curriculum look like in the 2020s? Will
it be disciplinary or interdisciplinary?
• How can schools develop students equipped
for future study and the workplace who are
confident, responsible, reflective, innovative and
engaged?
BELS IGCSE subject teachers had also opportunity to
hold online seminars (webinars) with the examiners of
different subject areas, which increased the awareness
for assessment and course materials implementation.
During the webinars, our teachers asked crucial
assessment questions to the Cambridge examiners
and made certain that how our students are measured
accurately on subject specific examinations.
