WORLD MATHEMATICS DAY – OCTOBER 17, 2015
BELS celebrated World Mathematics Day with the Prep
Students in their Saturday classes.
Our first activity was competing in an Online
Mathematics Contest with students from all around the
world. Students were mixed from four classes of 12 into
three groups of 16 students. Pairs of students within a
group shared a computer as they tried to quickly solve
the online questions. As you see, Melisa watches and
checks Merve’s work.
Our third activity was origami, the Japanese art of
paper-folding. Students learned the basic folds, and
then produced colorful pinwheels. Here Yiğit is trying
to figure out what to do next, as he thinks about the
geometry he has learned.

Our second activity was learning to make tessellations,
in the style of the Dutch graphic artist, M. C. Escher
(1898 – 1972). Students watched a video explaining
the procedure, and then made their own tessellations.
Barış concentrates as he cuts out his shape, which will
become the model for his tessellation.
