Safety Spotlight
Back to School Safety
August 2016
Summer vacation is drawing to a close and soon the bells will be ringing to mark a new school year.
The Fire and Police Departments need the help of both parents and students all working together to
achieve the safety goals we have for our children and community. Please talk about these safety tips
and reminders with your family.
DRIVER SAFETY
Obey all traffic warning signs including “no cell phone use” when
lights are flashing in school zones.
Slow down in residential areas and school zones.
Red flashing lights and an extended stop sign = drivers must stop
in both directions. Do not ever pass a bus in this situation.
Yellow flashing lights = the bus anticipates stopping to pick up
children. Drivers should slow down and be prepared to stop. Do
not attempt to pass the bus.
SCHOOL BUS SAFETY
Cross the street at the corner; obey traffic signals and always
stay in the crosswalk.
Do not dart out into the street, cross between parked cars, and
never walk behind a bus.
Stand away from the curb while waiting for a bus and stay in
clear view of the bus driver.
Board your bus after it comes to a complete stop. Be sure to
only board your bus and not an alternate one.
GETTING TO SCHOOL SAFELY
All car riders should always wear a seat belt. Children under 4’9”
should be in a proper child passenger safety seat (car seat).
Students that ride their bikes or scooters to school should always
wear a properly fitted helmet. In addition, ride on the right side of
the road, and in the same direction traffic is going.
Students that walk or ride their bikes to school should only cross
the street at an intersection, and use a route which the school has
placed crossing guards.
