Don’t let language become a barrier
Even when you speak English at university, with your teachers and classmates, your roommates and sometimes even when buying at shops, there will be occasions when a minimum knowledge of the official language will become indispensable. Many cities around the world do not expect English speaking people in their departments, and you should not be surprised if the international offices representatives cannot communicate fluently in other language, besides German. “Registering my new address and the extension of my visa application process would have been completely different and maybe unpleasant experience if I had gone there alone. Luckily, I had native speaker friends who could accompany me to do the official paperwork. You should think of this issue in advance, so you can ask your friends or contact uni staff that can help you in these cases. Most universities have people who are ready to go with you and fill out forms, which you could not complete by yourself. There are buddy programs and classmates who are willing to help you”. More than 185 million people worldwide speak German, and even if it’s not the easiest language to learn, there are many ways to practice it. Always remember to look for speaking groups, tandem partners or courses if you want to gain skills and become proficient in your host country’s language!
Speaking a foreign language can make your life abroad easier and will definitely help you making friends! When taking courses, remember to check if language courses are compulsory for you. If not, you can always register to enhance your résumé.
