Planetarium.
As you probably will know, Canada has two official languages, namely English and French. English is the predominant language spoken in Winnipeg. However, Old St. Boniface -Winnipeg’s French Quarter, is largely French-speaking. St. Boniface is the heart of the city’s history. Visit Le Musée de Saint-Boniface Museum and take a trip through Métis and FrancoManitoban culture, and then wander the grounds of St. Boniface Cemetery and Cathedral, the eternal resting place of Manitoba’s founder, Louis Riel.
After all the information on Winnipeg, let’s continue with the university as this is very important for a student studying abroad. The University of Winnipeg (UofW) belongs to one of Canada’s top under-graduate universities because of the adequate class sizes, the libraries, healthy campus food, the environmental commitment, the satisfaction with personal safety and security on campus, the quality of education, the course availability and diversity.
Furthermore, the UofW is highly regarded for athletics especially for Basketball, Volleyball, Soccer, Wrestling and Baseball.
The modern university has around 10,000 students, 500 of them are international students. This offers a high diversity and the possibility to establish contact and to become familiar with other cultures. Moreover, the students can decide if they want to live in a dormitory or with a host family. Both options have their advantages. When you live in a dormitory, you will meet a lot of students both Canadians and international students. As a result, you get to know the different cultures. In contrast, you have a ‘family life’ in a host family where you become familiar with their eating habits and their culture, for example how they celebrate Thanksgiving or Christmas.
The university has a small campus and is known for the small classes which do not have more than 20 students per course. As a result, the atmosphere is good and the student is involved in the course as well as supported by the instructor. The UofW offers a great variety of courses which are divided in lectures and seminars. They also offer creative courses where students learn how to write poems or stories. It will be difficult to choose between several great courses.
Finally, I can say that it was a great experience to travel so far away and to meet people and to learn about their culture. Canada is a multicultural country with lots of different people and cultures and with lots of international students. I stayed with two families and three students from other countries. I learned about their cultures and their food habits. It was good to stay in Canada because I could improve my speaking abilities and experience a different academic system. I can only advise other students to go abroad because it is a really good experience. It
is helpful to improve your English skills and a good opportunity to meet new people from all around the world. Besides, concerning the profession, the semester abroad is very good as it is appreciated and to some extent demanded. Globalization requires a good knowledge of English and the cooperation to work in another country. Every student is advised to seize the chance to study abroad and use all the opportunities the university and the international
student office provide.
Last but not least, don’t worry about the weather. As a four-season destination, the average temperatures in Winnipeg range between -12 degrees Celsius in the winter months to +26 degrees Celsius in the summertime. Due to its northern location, Winnipeg residents enjoy 2,300 hours of sunlight annually and up to 16 hours of
