Telvin Gabriel’ s dunk off a pass from Hose – his first points of the game – put the Bearcats back on top. Gabriel was fouled and missed the free throw, but Washington was fouled on the rebound and made two free throws for an 85-82 lead with 2:18 left.
Williams made a pair of free throws to pull the Jaguars within 85-84 with 1:50 left.
A series of turnovers left Augusta with a chance to take the lead with 55 seconds to go. Sherrill drew a foul and made one of two free throws for an 85-all tie with 42 seconds left.
The Bearcats committed another turnover and Sherrill was fouled again with 11 seconds left. He missed the first free throw but made the second, putting Augusta on top 86-85.
Lander drove up the court in hopes of hitting a game-winner. Hose got a shot off in the paint that bounced off the rim, and Washington grabbed the rebound and laid it in with two seconds left for an 87-86 lead.
Sherrill’ s desperation 3 at the buzzer hit high off the backboard as Lander players spilled onto the court to celebrate.
Three PBC Men’ s Basketball Teams Advance to NCAA Tournament
INDIANAPOLIS, IND – Columbus State, Montevallo and Lander will all continue their 2015-16 seasons after the NCAA announced the field for the 64-team tournament on Sunday night from Indianapolis. The NCAA Southeast Regional will begin on Saturday in Harrogate, Tenn., at Lincoln Memorial University, the # 1 seed in the region. Columbus State will be the # 5 seed with Montevallo # 6 and Lander # 8.
Columbus State will be making its second consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament and the 12th overall in program history. CSU earned the sixth seed last season before falling in the first round to UNC Pembroke. This is the third trip to the tournament for the Cougars under sixth-year head coach Robert Moore. Columbus State stands 21-7 overall after reaching the semifinals of the PBC Tournament.
Montevallo earned its seventh consecutive berth to the NCAA Division II Men’ s Basketball Tournament and its 11th bid in the past 13 years after earning an at-large bid as the No. 6 seed in the Southeast Region. Montevallo will face Wingate University, the No. 3 seed, in the NCAA Division II Southeast Region Tournament quarterfinals Saturday, March 12
