Young Harris Repeats as PBC Men’ s Soccer Tournament Champs with 2-0 Win over Lander
EVANS, Ga. | Young Harris College scored a goal in each half as the Mountain Lions claimed their second consecutive Peach Belt Conference Tournament championship with a 2-0 defeat of No. 12-ranked Lander University Sunday( Nov. 8) afternoon at a muddy Blanchard Woods Park.
The Mountain Lions, who were the tournament’ s top seed, avenged a 3-1 loss to the Bearcats during the regular season as they won their sixth consecutive match and improved to 16-3-0. The Bearcats, who were seeded third, fell to 14-3-1. Both teams will find out their postseason destinations when the NCAA Division II Tournament field is unveiled Monday( Nov. 9) evening.
Young Harris took a 1-0 lead midway through the first half when All-PBC Tournament performers Paco Craig and Lewis Hilton teammed up. Hilton sent in a direct kick from 40 yards out to Craig near the right post. Craig headed the ball past Lander goalkeeper Barrett Nielsen, who had nine saves, at the 24:34 mark for his seventh goal of 2015.
The Mountain Lions, which outshot Lander 21-5( 11-4 on goal), added an insurance goal with 8:30 remaining in the match as Marco Micaletto knocked in a rebound from 10 yards out of Jake Simpson shot that Nielson couldn’ t corral. It was Micaletto’ s fourth goal of the season.
Mikie Rowe was also named to the all-tournament team while Macauley King was named the tournament MVP. King, a defender,
was a big reason why Lander was shutout for only the second time this season and held the Bearcats to a season-low five shots( previous low was 12).
Jordan Bradshaw picked up four saves in goal as he notched his sixth clean sheet of 2015.
Young Harris, Lander Earn NCAA Men’ s Soccer Tournament Berths
INDIANAPOLIS, IND – The Young Harris and Lander men’ s soccer teams are not done yet. Both programs were among the 38 chosen to compete for the NCAA Men’ s Soccer National Championship by the NCAA on Monday night. Young Harris will be the # 2 seed in the southeast region and get a first-round bye while Lander is the # 4 seed.
Young Harris College, which enters the tournament at 16-3-0, earned its second consecutive trip to the national tournament as they earned the No. 2 seed in the Southeast Region and will host first- and second-round matches Friday( Nov. 13) and Sunday( Nov. 15) at the YHC Soccer and Lacrosse Field.
The other two teams coming to the Enchanted Valley will be No. 3 seed Carson-Newman University( 15-2-2) and No. 6 seed Limestone College( 15-4-0).
The winner of the first-round match will face the Mountain Lions, who won both the Peach Belt Conference regular season and tournament titles for the second consecutive year, in Sunday’ s( Nov. 15) 1 p. m. second-round game.
