Our primary commitment is to serve the students of the surrounding community by providing a high-quality secondary school option in the Coliseum neighborhood. We strive to create a college going culture beginning in middle school that acknowledges the magnitude of the task at hand. We need a full seven years with our students to get them college ready. One-hundred percent of our student body would be the first in their family to graduate from a four-year college and 96 percent of our students receive free and reduced lunch, so we couple our academic program with parent programs that aim to engage, support, and educate. CCPA’s academic program is split into three divisions, each with a distinct purpose and a corresponding structure to support that purpose. Our Division 1 (sixth and seventh grades) has a goal of rapid academic growth. Over 85 percent of our students enter sixth grade below grade level in English and Math, as measured by the California Standards Test. To achieve our goal of every student on grade level by eighth grade, our Division 1 students loop with the same teachers for two years to build meaningful relationships and also participate in a mandatory extended day until 5pm for intense academic support. Our Division 2 (eighth through tenth grades) is our traditional secondary school structure, with an emphasis on college preparation. Starting with Algebra in eighth grade, our Division 2 students aim to complete the majority of their California State University/ University of California A - G requirements during this period. Extended day academic supportis also offered for our Division 2 students until 4:15 pm. Our English and Math departments use the ACT readiness Springboard curriculum to ensure rigorous instruction. Students are also offered intensive intervention in math and language during the school day. Our Division 3 students (eleventh and twelfth grades) participate in our ‘Make the Road’ program o n a modified half-day schedule. They have the option of taking CSU/UC transferable courses at junior college or participating in a professional internship. The goal of Division 3 is to successfully transition our students into college and/or career by initiating that process in a safe and supportive environment. 94 Oakland Unified School District Enrollment Options Guide 2015-16 BUILD Entrepreneurial and Business Academy at Coliseum College Prep (9-11) Site Code 232 | Options Code 58 Our entrepreneurial business pathway is developed in partnership with the BUILD program. Students in this pathway participate in two years of entrepreneurial business classes. In 9th grade, students in the BUILD program spend the year developing a business, writing a business plan, and participating in multiple practice showcase presentations in preparation for a major presentation competition at Berkeley’s HAAS Business School. All of this is to prepare students in their Sophomore year to pitch their business to venture capitalist for actual funding and successful begin to run their businesses. In 10th grade, students take E2- a business course focused on running their businesses, manufacturing, economic, sales and policy. The E2 class also prepares students to apply and effectively participate in both a business focuses internship and take courses at a community college, which will take place their 11th grade year. During both of these years, students participate in a night component where they receive three additional hours of instruction and work directly with community mentors from various business sectors. www.ousd.k12.ca.us
