Middle 6-8
Westlake Middle School opened its doors to students in the
fall of 1928 as one of the first middle schools in Oakland.
In our 86 years here, we have educated many illustrious
Oaklanders, including such luminaries as the Honorable
Ron Dellums, Baseball Hall of Famer Frank Robinson, the
Pointer Sisters, esteemed educators Caroline and Gary
Yee, and many more, including our current students and
recent graduates. At Westlake Middle School, we live by
the Westlake Way, which was designed and written by
Westlake students. The acronym RESPECT delineates and
reinforces the commitment of the entire Westlake Family,
including students, teachers, administrators, and parents, to
education and the betterment of our Oakland community.
Our Eagle Village Community Center (EVCC) is our very own
non-profit organization specifically created to ensure that
Westlake is an effective Full-Service Community School. We
maintain our family atmosphere throughout the school by
providing a parent resource center with computer classes,
legal advice, financial planning, job coaching, tax support,
and any other services. Additionally, the EVCC provides
mental health services to over 100 students by coordinating
our counseling services. EVCC also oversees our after-school
program, which has been selected by the state board of
education as the model for after-school programs, providing
affinity clubs such as science, soccer, entrepreneurship,
and many more. A homework center that is proctored by
teachers is also available to all students. Our excellent
performing and visual arts programs bring opportunities to
our students that other communities are not as fortunate to
have. Developed community partnerships bring professional
experiences to our students in these areas. Creating a well
rounded school experience, with the opportunities listed
above combined with the technology integration into our
common core academic standards, Westlake provides a
well-rounded educational and social experience that mirrors
the uniqueness of Oakland. These are the reasons so many
families choose to join the Westlake family!
