Oakland Unified School District Elementary (TK-5) Manzanita Community School 2409 East 27th Street, 94601 535-2822 www.ousd.k12.ca.us/ manzanitacommunity Site Code 179 | Options Code 121 Elementary TK-5 Manzanita Community School is a small elementary school in the Fruitvale Neighborhood. We have 330 students and 16 classroom teachers. Our school is a very diverse school with many home languages being spoken. We are a Balanced Literacy School, which means reading and writing are taught using a workshop model. In reading our students are given books to read at their reading level during the reading block, while teachers meet with students one-on-one or in small groups. Students who are not reading on grade level will be pulled i n small groups by their teacher through out the week and given more support. We also offer intervention to our lowest readers with our Literacy Coach two or more days a week. We are focused on preparing our students for the rigorous expectations of the common core and the SBAC (the end of year test that replaces the CSTs) and are focused on providing students with classwork that offers more experiences applying what they have learned in their own words. Our school staff and teaching staff are stable and our teachers work together and collaborate to best support our students needs. Students receive 60 minutes of PE each week, 30-60 minutes (depending on grade level) in our Computer Lab (working on reading skills, typing practice, math review, and doing research), 30 minutes of library time, and 30 minutes of classroom game time with our Playworks Coach. Our School Community is a caring one focused on ensuring our students leave us both strong academic and social skills. There are opportunities for students to participate in Student Leadership and Sports Teams. If you would like to know more about our school please call us for a tour. 48 Enrollment Options Guide 2015-16 School Uniform Description We ask that students wear blue or white polo shirts and tennis shoes every day.
