Oakland Unified School District Enrollment Options Guide 2015-16 Dear Parents, Caregivers, and Community, Welcome to the Oakland Unified School District! If you’re evaluating OUSD for the first time, thank you for considering Oakland Public Schools. We’re eager to demonstrate our commitment to ensuring that Every Student Thrives! If you’re already part of OUSD, we’re grateful for your continued partnership as we build a school district that is accountable for quality in all aspects of the organization, provides challenging and engaging instruction in every classroom and offers a fun, yet rigorous education that prepares students for postsecondary success. Your child’s education is an awesome responsibility and one we do not take lightly. OUSD is a Community School District relentlessly focused on meeting the academic, social, and emotional needs of all its students. Our vision is that “Every Oakland Public School student finds joy in their academic experience while graduating with the skills to ensure they are caring, competent, fully-informed, critical thinkers who are prepared for college, career, and community.” We can only realize this vision if we leverage every asset available to the District in service our students—that includes providing the widest range of school options. We’re growing the number of quality schools, expanding the range of services provided to students, and increasing the appeal of OUSD across the board. Not every school is right for every child, but within the Oakland Unified School District, there’s likely a school that’s a great fit for your family. Oakland schools are improving by nearly every measure and serving as models in many respects. The past five years have seen higher graduation rates, increased proficiency, stronger academic performance, and greater recognition of our schools and educators at the state and national levels. We have leadership roles in the Community Schools movement, Linked Learning, Social and Emotional Learning, Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM), School-Based Health Centers ,Common Core implementation, school nutrition, and the fight against disproportionate outcomes for African-American males. There’s lot to love about Oakland schools today, but the future is even brighter. We will expand popular sites to accommodate demand while retaining quality. We will add new grade levels to thriving elementary and middle schools. We will implement proven programs to strengthen middle and high schools and transform sites that are not fully serving students into high-quality schools of choice. We will implement common enrollment so that families can compare all Oakland Public Schools, both OUSD Community Schools and OUSD charter schools, to select the best option for their children. In the end, we will all benefit from richer, more connected communities with a wider range of attractive school choices. Within this guide, you’ll find a detailed profile for every OUSD school, including useful descriptions of school performance and specialty programs that meet your child’s needs and satisfy their interests. In addition, you’ll find all the information you need on the enrollment process so you can make the appropriate selection for your student. We sincerely hope that choice includes the Oakland Unified School District, where we’re working hard to ensure that Every Student Thrives! Sincerely, Antwan Wilson Superintendent Oakland Unified School District 2 www.ousd.k12.ca.us
