Afterschool Programs What are Afterschool Programs? Afterschool Programs refer to government-funded, comprehensive programs provided by the District in cooperation with community partners. Almost all OUSD schools have partnerships in place with local nonprofit organizations to operate their afterschool program. Programs are offered daily until 6pm and provide academic support, enrichment, and physical activity aligned with school day goals. In 2013–2014, OUSD afterschool programs provided safe and enriching after school learning opportunities for over 18,000 Oakland children and youth in 75 schools. Approximately 9,000 students attended daily. Why are Afterschool Programs important? • Youth report that afterschool programs help them improve their study skills, do better in class, and feel more confident www.ousd.k12.ca.us about high school and college. • Youth who attend afterschool for 100 or more days (just over half of all youth) are about 20 percent more likely to score Proficient or Advanced on the California Standards Test in English Language Arts or Math than those who attended less often. • Youth who attend afterschool have higher school day attendance and feel more connected to school.  Over 85 percent of participating youth report that the afterschool program helps them feel more connected to and part of their school. • Parents feel more connected with the school as a result of their child’s participation in the afterschool program.  About 85 percent of parents reported they are more involved at school and 96 percent of parents reported they feel better prepared to support their child’s learning as a result of their child’s participation in the afterschool program.
