Afterschool Programs
What are Afterschool Programs?
Afterschool Programs refer to government-funded,
comprehensive programs provided by the District in
cooperation with community partners. Almost all OUSD
schools have partnerships in place with local nonprofit
organizations to operate their afterschool program. Programs
are offered daily until 6pm and provide academic support,
enrichment, and physical activity aligned with school day
goals.
In 2013–2014, OUSD afterschool programs provided safe and
enriching after school learning opportunities for over 18,000
Oakland children and youth in 75 schools. Approximately
9,000 students attended daily.
Why are Afterschool Programs
important?
• Youth report that afterschool programs help them improve
their study skills, do better in class, and feel more confident

about high school and college.
• Youth who attend afterschool for 100 or more days (just
over half of all youth) are about 20 percent more likely to
score Proficient or Advanced on the California Standards
Test in English Language Arts or Math than those who
attended less often.
• Youth who attend afterschool have higher school day
attendance and feel more connected to school. Over 85
percent of participating youth report that the afterschool
program helps them feel more connected to and part of
their school.
• Parents feel more connected with the school as a result
of their child’s participation in the afterschool program.
About 85 percent of parents reported they are more
involved at school and 96 percent of parents reported
they feel better prepared to support their child’s learning
as a result of their child’s participation in the afterschool
program.
What are the Afterschool Program
Goals?
The goals of OUSD’s Afterschool Programs Office are to:
1. support strong, effective partnerships between schools and
