Fashion Art and Design Academy (FADA) integrates the
arts into the core curriculum to provide a creative, handson method of learning. The program is also designed to
strengthen the development of students as critical thinkers,
self-aware individuals, and positive members of their
communities. The key to this work is the emphasis on family
and community partnerships and the development of student
voice and responsibility. At FADA, the learning priorities are
student literacy, skills in critical thinking, self-awareness,
and community involvement. A student who is fluent and
comfortable with the written and spoken word, technology,
contemporary culture, diversity, history, media, mathematics,
science, the arts, and the environment demonstrates literacy
at FADA. We teach students to take this core knowledge
and use it for reflection, application, and action. Our staff, in
combination with families and the community, helps guide
and support the development of students as scholars and
responsible citizens. FADA features classes in fashion design,
visual arts, and graphic design for 10th - 12th graders. Our
academy incorporates many hallmarks of the high school
reform movement, such as creating a close, family-like
atmosphere, integrating academic and career technical
education, and establishing business partnerships. The
three-year program provides students with a project-based
curriculum, a mentor program, classroom speakers, field
trips, and exploration of college and career options through
job shadowing and internships. Oakland Tech will expand
to include the Far West campus as a satellite Fashion Art
and Design Academy in the 2012-13 school year. Students at
Oakland Tech will have the choice to attend the Fashion Art and
Design Academy at the Far West campus.
In a peaceful and respectful environment, all Tech students will
acquire the skills needed to be productive citizens and lifelong
learners. Oakland Technical High School (known familiarly as
“Tech”) is located on 13 acres in North Oakland. There are
a total of 77 classrooms, a library, five computer labs, and
a health clinic. Oakland Tech has a long history of offering
innovative, rigorous and supportive programs, and continues
to work on improving its programs. Our vision for Oakland
Tech is for all students, staff and parents to work cooperatively
and communicate respectfully in a peaceful, safe and clean
environment. We offer a wide array of academies and
specialized programs, including Health, Engineering, Computer,
