Council News - Managing Stormwater
The Australian Government and Queensland
Governments contributed $20 million through the
Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements
(NDRRA) to accelerate the completion of flood
mitigation works. Toowoomba Regional Council
contributed $5 million for these works to be
completed. These works have now been finalised and
this flood mitigation measure, doubling as an active
green space can now be enjoyed by the community.
Pest management
After the adoption of the Toowoomba Region Pest
Management Plan 2014-2018, Council has partnered
with the community this year to manage pest plants
and animals across the region. This year working with
Clifton Landcare, Council monitored the movement
of feral pigs along the Clifton Creek and supplied the
tools necessary to reduce the impact of these feral
animals to surrounding agricultural and residential
property. This included the supply of suitable prefeeding and trapping equipment.

The future sustainability of our region relies on Council
being responsive to change, particularly that of climate
change and knowing the impacts of our practices and
daily workflow. Now, more than ever, Council needs
to be aware of our ecological footprint. We continue
to work with the community to reduce this with
sustainable practices and assessing future risks before
they impact upon our region. With a plan to ensure
a cleaner environment for our future, we can build a
responsive, resilient and strong community, focussed
on driving sustainable practices across the region.
Our challenges
• Ensuring Council’s waste management and landfill
assets are sustainable and adhere to legislative
requirements
• Use of technology to manage our changing
environment and responsiveness to trends
• Assessing and prioritising future sustainability
issues across a large geographic area
• Staying up-to-date with new sustainable practices
and up-skilling relevant teams.

CHAPTER 4 Our goals
STATUS
Our achievements
• Education initiatives that inform the community
on the impacts of climate change and
environmentally-friendly practices
• Concentration of resources into the effects of
climate change
• Environmentally responsible decision-making at
the planning stage during construction of facilities
• Ensuring the compliance of climate change
reporting.
Community outcomes
Educating the community on our changing
environment
Our water and waste education team have developed,
produced and released important resources online
and through our schools and general community on
climate change and what can be done to reduce its
effects. This includes workshops for the benefits of
recycling for our carbon footprint and preparing for the
changing climate.
