2013 Tennis Hall of Fame 2013 Section Annual Awards Ala Moana Hotel | November 23, 2013 Section Service Awards Kahiau: A Tennis Foundation, is responsible for establishing the criteria and handling the selection of inductees to the USTA Hawaii Pacific Section Tennis Hall of Fame. There are two Tennis Hall of Fame awards recognized among the community: Service and Player. The Service Award honors a volunteer, official, coach or individual who has made outstanding contributions to tennis. The Player Award commemorates an individual that is recognized for outstanding competitive achievements with considerations of sportsmanship and character. In 2013, the USTA Hawaii Pacific Section proudly inducted two fine recipients for each category: 2013 TENNIS HALL OF FAME Helen Young Kauai Sam Caldwell Service Recipient Sam Caldwell began his tennis volunteer career in the mid-1960s when his two daughters began to play competitively. A social player himself, he saw the need for some additional organization and oversight to bring further structure to the tennis community – so he volunteered to help. Over the next 30+ years, he was a fixture at local tournaments, assisting with draws, helping at the scheduling desk, and serving as tournament referee. He helped to develop the Hawaii Tennis Umpires Association that trained and supplied umpires for local and national tournament events. His volunteerism culminated with him serving as Hawaii Pacific Sectional Delegate for four years in the mid-90s. Sam worked for tennis in Hawaii when “shorts were short” and t-shirts had collars. From the early days at the McKinley High School gym with Roscoe Tanner and Billie Jean King, to the stadium at Royal Lahaina Hotel with Jimmy Connors and John Newcombe, Sam was there as Tournament Referee. He remembers the “streaker” at the Hawaii Leis’ World Team Tennis match at Blaisdell Center and how Lei’s team member, Ross Case, was stopped at the door by security, insisting that he be let inside as “one of the ply-ers – Caise, Ross Caise” in
