Oregon Corinthian
Sailing Association
A Message from the OCSA Commodore:
Greetings Sailors,
Another sailing season is nearly here and your 2013 OCSA Board can’t wait to help get
you back out on the water. This year’s race book is chock-full of important information
about sailboat racing on the Portland stretch of the Columbia River, and a bit of information about other sailing opportunities in our area as well. We hope you find it as useful a
resource as ever, in conjunction with your 2013 course chart.
In addition to helping offset the costs of the race book, course chart, annual race management seminar and season-clinching tropical awards party, your OCSA dues are hardat-work improving sailing in Portland. We are continuing to work collaboratively with all
clubs on the river to standardize sailing instructions, provide online race registration and
administer a one-stop-shop source of information and results at www.sailpdx.org. This
year we are also facilitating a couple of programs to help sailors prepare for, and enjoy,
racing even more. First, we will host a one-time Racing Rules of Sailing Update seminar in
February (at a reduced cost to the sailing community) bringing renowned instructor Dave
Perry to town for a day-and-a-half of practical instruction on the revised racing rules.
Second, we will facilitate a centralized protest committee process for all racing during the
sailing season, bringing consistent resolution to conflicts that arise on the water. We think
both programs will make racing more fun, fair and competitive.
Finally, I just want to share my personal excitement for the opportunity to serve all of you
as OSCA’s commodore. It’s my top goal to keep working with the OCSA Board and our peers
in all the clubs to provide the best racing experience possible to skippers and crew, while
also providing a fun opportunity for volunteers to support sailing on the Columbia through
consistent, knowledgeable race management. To that end, it’s my hope that we will always
look for ways to demonstrate Corinthian spirit to each other, to believe we are all doing the
best we can with the resources we have available, and to not lose sight of the privilege it
is to sail together on our beautiful Columbia.
Go fast, be safe and have fun!
