Sailing is now a club sport opportunity for all Portland area students. The WSC Youth Race
Program, offers local youth a chance to improve their sailing, racing and teamwork skills
under the guidance of expert coaches. The program has grown to include more than 45
boys & girls from schools throughout the Portland Vancouver area. In addition to weekday
practice on the Willamette River, kids have an opportunity to compete with other schools
and club teams throughout the Northwest at weekend regattas. Boats (double-handed
Club 420s and single-handed Lasers & Optimists) and US Sailing-certified coaching are
provided by the Willamette Sailing Club. Parents share in the volunteer duties at weekly
practices and weekend regattas. Previous sailing experience is not required, but participants must be able to swim, commit to regular practices, and provide their own life
jackets and cold weather clothing. Students with no previous sailing experience must take
a beginning class or orientation prior to participating in the program.
The Spring 2013 session begins in February and continues through the end of May. Practices are three days a week after school at Willamette Sailing Club, located just north of
Willamette Park in the Johns Landing neighborhood in Southwest Portland. Fall session will
be September through November.
