Sustaining Drama Work in Schools: A Trainer of Trainers PD model
Chair: Lara Dossett, University of Texas at Austin, Drama and Theatre for Youth
and Communities
Location: Denver 2nd – Torrey’s Peak
This arts-based session will focus on MFA thesis research conducted at the
University of Texas at Austin about sustaining drama-based instruction through
professional development in K-12 public schools. This session aims to share
the successes and challenges of a trainer of trainer professional development
model. Participants will begin the session by actively engaging in a community
building activity, which provides the foundation for this work with teachers.
After a brief description contextualizing the research done in Austin, small
groups of participants will receive scenarios that represent each of the TOTs.
In an effort to involve the session participants in the TOT’s experiences, they
will be asked to collaboratively problem solve and navigate the journey of
their TOT through embodied visual representations, arts-based activities, and
conversation. For the final section of the session we will visually map the TOT’s
experiences as a way to unpack the major findings of the research.

Developing Drama through Visual Art: A Creative Way to Create Theatre
Chair: Lynda D. Belt, Arts Are The Answer
Location: Denver 2nd – Maroon Peak
Developing Drama through Visual Art integrates visual art and drama in a fresh
new way. Visual Art masterpieces become the text and through a variety of
activities developed by museums and Project Zero’s Artful Thinking program,
participants will experience and practice skills of scene building. Improvisation
skills and theatre-in-education practices will be combined with looking for
details, making inferences, supporting with evidence and looking for choices
to create intriguing scenes. Participants will leave with better understanding
of arts elements and design principles - the pieces that contribute to the
whole and how these elements can also be parts and whole of a drama scene.
Developing Drama through Visual Art, integrates the best of drama skills,
the best of visual art and 21st Century skills of critical thinking, collaboration,
creative processes and communication. This workshop’s skills and activities
can be transferred to many disciplines including reading, writing, social
studies, art and drama classes.
