BELS STUDENTS CONNECTED TO NASA
BELS Physics Department organized an online conference
with two Turkish Scientists Dr. Umut Yıldız from NASA,
Jet Propulsion Laboratory and Selçuk Topal from
Oxford University,Astrophysics Department on Friday
20 March. The title of the conference was “A Career
in Astronomy and Science”. During the 2.5 hours long
conference scientists shared many valuble information
about their professional career, the steps that should be
followed to be an astronomer, the latest advancements
in astronomy, birth and death of stars, observation
methods in astronomy, observatories around the world.
IB physics students (11th and 12th grade) attended this
conference. They asked many questions to the scientist
both directly and
via twitter. The BELS physics teacher Zeynep Tuğba
Kahyaoğlu explained that the main purposes of this
conference were to connect students to the primary
source of information and to show them role models.
The 12th gradestudent Selim Furkan Tekin said that “this
online conference created an awareness on us about
the necessity of astronomy studies in Turkey and the
necessity of working hard. I hope we will take part on
these kind of researches in the future”.
