I
f you head out to certain
Hutong neighbourhoods
north and west of downtown
Beijing with a good driver,
you will find what may seem
like the strangest place for
one of China’s best recording
studios. If you get completely
lost in the myriad sidestreets
and alleyways, just wait a few
minutes and you are likely to
encounter the Canadian behind
it all weaving his way home
on his bicycle. After just a few
years in China, Vancouver’s
Jarome Matthew has built
himself not just a state-of-the-art
recording studio, but a growing
reputation in China’s embryonic
music scene as the go-to guy
to make Chinese rockers sound
more like international bands.
