For Friday, I have job shadowing. Even though I am a wildlife biology major, I was sent to an aquarium. I wasn’ t sure what to expect at first but I absolutely loved it. That day happened to be a day where they got new animals in. We received 20 new baby seahorses, 20 new jelly fish, and two new baby bur fish, which is a puffer fish. They all were so adorable. They taught me how to quarantine the new fish that they get. They quarantine the new fish because there may have been bacteria in the water they were in or the animal may contain a disease. I watched an aquarist revive all 20 of the jelly fish that had come in. They were all dead due to them being in one bag and the water was too hot. I also learned how to test the ammonia and pH in the water using a probe. I got to feed the animals and learn what they eat. I also helped clean tanks and make the water that goes in the tanks. Also I cleaned a sock filter for the freshwater tank which had been full of fish waste that piled up for two days. It was really gross but I’ ve had worse. In the end, I learned a lot of stuff that I never knew before. By the time I finished with everything, I was ready to get back to the dorm and get rid of the mixture fish poop, salt, and fish smell.
For the second Friday of job shadowing when I got there, I cleaned fish tanks and help the diver clean. I also cleaned more filters and yes, it was still nasty. I got to help feed the sea turtles, sharks, rays, sea horses, and other fish. I also got to transport fish to the Hilton Hotel. They have an exhibit there that doesn’ t have many fish, but even after putting 15 baby clown fish in, it didn’ t make it look any fuller. When I got back, I got to siphon water from the little tanks to clean them. I also got to see the new baby sharks that they had got in.- Rebecca Loftin

Every Friday, I visit the police department( APD) to job shadow. On my first Friday, I went to the despatchers’ room. My first impression was that it wasn’ t ANY- THING like movies. Everyone was very calm and relaxed. I was also very surprised to hear calls for things that were far from emergencies. For example, we got calls from people asking for their friend’ s phone numbers, from people that forgot they called the cable guy and thought they were being robbed, and from toddlers. Some calls were very amusing and others were more serious. I didn’ t realize that every day, there are more butt dials than actual emergencies! It was an amazing experience I’ ll never forget!- Deanna Gibson
