The Duke of Edinburgh Hillary Award welcomed 48
new entrants at the Bronze level this year. The
students joined a programme in which over 100
Havelock North High School students are currently
involved.
The new entrants have worked hard at the
Physical Recreation, Community Service and Skill
section of the award and at the time of writing this
are preparing for their two overnight expeditions.
This year the ‘Bronzies’ will be trying their hand
at camping in the outdoors when the stay at Te
Puia Hot Springs. The students were all trained in
outdoor first aid, equipment and navigation during
the training day in term 3 and are looking forward
to putting their new found skills into action.
The Silver group completed two very successful
expeditions to Lake Waikaremoana and Tongariro
National Park. 11 of these students set off in
December to take part in the first Havelock North
High School World Challenge expedition. The
students will travel to Thailand and Laos spending
28 days travelling, trekking through the jungle and
