The Environmental Committee
The efforts of the Environmental Committee this year have not gone unnoticed. We
have carried out a school-wide paper recycling system and donated over 30 native
plantings from the Paper4Trees scheme. We are proud of our achievements. The
committee will miss the outstanding support from the Year 13’s who will be leaving
next year, and implore new members, young and old to step up to fill their shoes.
While Paper Recycling is the first step to reducing our carbon footprint, the way we
use resources needs to become a focus. With the Student ID cards in printing, our
school already has seen a marked decrease in paper wastage as students start to
think about how much they need to print. We hope that HNHS continues green paving
(or planting a grass path) in the future as the Committee grows. Thanks to all for your
support.

The School Services Committee
Being on the School Services Commitee this year has taught me a lot about
organisation and the necessity for team work. Throughout the year we organised the
Alice in Wonderland Ball, meeting regularly to discuss the cost, the food, the theme,
the tickets, the seating and many other things. I had not realised before being on the
committee how much there really was going on behind the scenes at a school ball. I
was surprised at how well all of the members of the committee worked together with so
many different personalities
Another task that the committee undertakes is the leavers’ jerseys which I personally
put a lot of effort into. Once again there is the pricing, the design (created by Hunter
Berkahn), the quality and which manufacturing company to choose. There were so
many components that had to be addressed. I learnt a lot about budgeting and the
importance of communication. Doing a mass order was particularly stressful as most
of the hoodies were personalised which presented the issue of triple checking. Whilst
it was stressful at the time, I learnt a lot and again the committee worked together by
triple checking every order with me. The final function that the committee undertakes is
the year thirteen leavers’ dinner. Members of the committee organised aspects of the
night. Some members of the committee created a power point presentation of our year
group that summarises the time we had at school and our future plans. Other members
produced a leavers’ magazine with pictures and areas for all to sign as a keepsake of
our time at Havelock North High School.
Being in the School Services Committee has taught me a lot about time management,
improved my organisation skills and I have been pleased with the way in which a group
of people who are so different can work together and achieve a common goal.
