Compliance Services Newsletter NEW NCAA INTERPRETATIONS Date Published: September 9, 2013 Date Published: August 13, 2013 The [NCAA] confirmed that, in sports other than basketball, it is not permissible for Stanford staff members to use a service or software that converts electronic mail (e.g., email) sent by a Stanford staff member into a text message when received by the prospective student-athlete (or family member of the recruit). The [NCAA] determined that Stanford may include a quotation by a recruiting or scouting service about a prospective student-athlete in a media release regarding the prospective student-athlete’s commitment, provided there is no indication that Stanford endorses the recruiting or scouting service and the prospective student-athlete has signed a National Letter of Intent (NLI). It is not permissible for gostanford.com to include a hyperlink to either the website of a noninstitutional publication that reports primarily on the institution’s athletics program or a recruiting/scouting service. SUBSCRIPTIONS TO RECRUITING OR SCOUTING SERVICES THAT PROVIDE ORAL REPORTS RELATED TO PROSPECTIVE STUDENT-ATHLETES Date Published: September 20, 2013 The [NCAA] confirmed that Stanford is not permitted to subscribe to a recruiting or scouting service that provides oral reports related to prospective studentathletes regardless of whether the service also disseminates information related to prospective student-athletes in any other manner (e.g., published reports, online profiles, video, etc.). PROSPECTIVE STUDENT-ATHLETES USED AS DEMONSTRATORS AT COACHES CLINICS Date Published: July 1, 2013 The [NCAA] confirmed that a prospective studentathlete is not permitted to serve as a demonstrator at a member institution’s coaches clinic. Further, a member institution’s coach who is presenting (e.g., lecturing, instructing, demonstrating) at a noninstitutional coaches clinic is not permitted to use prospective student-athletes as demonstrators. A member institution’s coach who observes a prospective student-athlete used as a demonstrator at a coach’s clinic must count the observation as an evaluation, and such observation is subject to all legislation governing observation of nonscholastic live athletics activities.
