Compliance Services Newsletter November 2013 Just Axe! compliance question of the month Ace is a high school senior tennis recruit who participated in a tournament over the weekend. Several Division I coaches spoke with Ace while she was warming up before her first competition. Was it permissible for these coaches to have contact with Ace after she officially checked into the tournament? Stanford students may study hard, but they play and volunteer with equal enthusiasm. At last count, there were more than 600 organized student groups on campus, all of which contribute to Stanford’s rich sense of community. While there are far too many student organizations to describe fully here, many groups offer websites. Information about the Haas Center for Public Service can be found at http://haas.stanford.edu/ See page 2 to check your answer! NLI HIGHLIGHTS NLI signing day is quickly approaching! The early signing period begins Wednesday, November 13 and concludes on November 20. Please remember that the following sports may not sign recruits during the early NLI period: Football, Soccer, Track & Field, Cross Country, and Men’s Water Polo. A few additional reminders about the NLI signing period: • Coaches may not make in-person, off-campus contact with a prospect on signing day. This includes any media/publicity events Stanford hosts in conjunction with signing day. • BEFORE signing day, coaches may confirm recruitment of a prospect. However, any comments regarding the prospect’s athletic ability, his/her future contribution to the program, or the probability of signing the prospect to Stanford are prohibited. • AFTER signing day, Compliance Services must confirm that they received and reviewed the recruit’s signed NLI before the recruit’s commitment to Stanford may be publicized. It is permissible to announce the recruit’s commitment through social media on signing day. But... o Mention of a recruit’s name must not include a tag/@twitterhandle until the calendar day AFTER the recruit signs. o Electronic correspondence is limited to email/fax until the calendar day AFTER the recruit signs. • Dead Period is November 11 – 14: No contacts, evaluations, official/unofficial visits, complimentary tickets to Stanford games, etc., during this period.
