2013-2014 Stanford CS Newsletter June 2014

Compliance Services Newsletter June 2014 NON-TRADITIONAL HOUSING for STUDENT-ATHLETES Living with Stanford Donors/Fans/Alumni Student-athletes are permitted to live with supporters of Stanford Athletics, but there is certain information that has been relayed to all student-athletes about their arrangement and the process for prior approval from the Compliance Services Office. 1) Student-athletes must pay the fair market value for their arrangement. The Compliance Services Office will set this value for each individual student-athlete given their housing arrangement and communicate all information to the student-athlete and their landlord. The monthly rent needs to be paid within the first 3 days of each month (and within the first 3 days of the move-in date). All rental payments are to be droppped off with Compliance Services, and the university will issue a check to the homeowner. 2) Student-athletes are permitted to work for their landlord to reduce their rent by a maximum of 50%. This work will be documented and agreed upon between the student-athlete, their landlord, and the compliance services office prior to any type of work performance or rent reduction. 3) Please have any student-athletes contact David Hall in the Compliance Services Office if they will be living with a Stanford supporter at any time. NEW NCAA INTERPRETATION COACHING CLINIC SPONSORED BY A RECRUITING OR SCOUTING SERVICE Date Published: May 9, 2014 The [NCAA] determined that an athletics department staff member may not be employed (either on a salaried or a volunteer basis) in any capacity by a coaches clinic established, sponsored or conducted by an individual or organization that provides recruiting or scouting services concerning prospective student-athletes, even if prospective student athletes are not involved in the coaches clinic. Just Axe! compliance question of the month The football recruiting coordinator at Ocean State University (OSU) is dividing up the telephone calls to senior prospects. There are several prospects located in different time zones. In these situations, do the OSU coaches use their time zone or the prospect's time zone to determine when calls may be made? Check your answer on page 2! A Non-Traditional Housing Agreement Form is required before their move-in date! Free or reduced-rate housing is an extra benefit and will immediately hinder a student-athlete’s eligibility! Schedule your Fall Eligibility Meeting! Please contact Shannon Wilson in the Compliance Services Office to schedule your fall eligibility meeting. The fall eligibility meetings will last approximately one hour. As a reminder, your student-athletes cannot participate in any countable athletically-related activities including team meetings, practice, conditioning, strength training, testing, etc. until after they have met with our office and received a physical exam (or have otherwise been cleared by Sports Medicine). All student-athletes need to be at the meeting, and one coach should be in attendance as well.
