Just Axe!
compliance question of the month
The men's and women's fencing teams at Ocean
State University are going to participate in
a joint practice session with the fencing
teams at Bay State College next week. Is it
permissible to practice together?
Check your answer on page 2!
With the upcoming bowl games schedule and the
Super Bowl on February 2, 2014, Compliance Services
would like to remind you that it is not permissible per
NCAA regulations to place a wager (which consists of
money or a tangible benefit), or provide information for
another individual to place a wager, on the outcome
of a collegiate or NFL football
game. This gambling prohibition
is in place for all DAPER staff,
coaches, and student-athletes;
and includes fantasy leagues
which require a fee to enter the
league and a prize for the winner
when the fantasy league ends.
NON-TRADITIONAL HOUSING
for STUDENT-ATHLETES
Living with Stanford Donors/Fans/Alumni
Student-athletes are permitted to live with supporters
of Stanford Athletics, but there is certain information
that has been relayed to all student-athletes about
their arrangement and the process for prior approval
from the Compliance Services Office.
1) Student-athletes must pay the fair market value for
their arrangement. The compliance services office
will set this value for each individual student-athlete
given their housing arrangement and communicate all
information to the student-athlete and their landlord.
2) Student-athletes are permitted to work for their
landlord to reduce their rent by a maximum of 50%.
This work will be documented and agreed upon
between the student-athlete, their landlord, and the
compliance services office prior to any type of work
performance or rent reduction.
3) Please have any student-athletes contact Shannon
in the compliance services office if they will be living
with a Stanford supporter at any time, including the
winter vacation period. A Non-Traditional Housing
Agreement Form is required before their move-in date!
Free or reduced-rate housing is an extra benefit
and would jeopardize a student-athlete’s eligibility!
THE STANFORD
O CCA S I ONAL MEAL P OL ICY
& THE HOL IDAYS
If you missed the StanfordCS meeting for DAPER staff on September 24, you missed the recent update regarding
occasional meals. The Stanford occasional meal policy has been updated to now allow 3 occasional meals per
quarter, including the summer quarter. This maximum of three meals per quarter includes any meals provided
outside of team travel by a Stanford staff member, donor, DAPER Development Office, or alum.
If you know of a student-athlete who is in the local area over the winter break, a DAPER staff member can provide
an occasional meal to the student-athlete (although not to parents, friends or other relatives of the athlete) at the
staff member’s home or at a local restaurant within a 30-mile radius of the Farm. The meal will count within the three
meals per quarter as noted above.
