8th Grade Course Curriculum
Language Arts:
8th Grade English (2 semesters)
8th Grade Language Arts is an effective refresher for strengthening grammar skills, reviewing appropriate usage of punctuation and expanding active listening aptitude. In preparation for high school writing courses, the course introduces students to the formal essay and its components. The course includes practice with reference materials such as the dictionary and the thesaurus and focus on providing accurate citation of sources cultivate student research skills. Eighth graders will explore the purposes of written communication through the identification of literal, implied, and figurative meaning. Lessons engage and stimulate students through multimedia elements, supporting retention and achievement. Unlike traditional instruction, ODYSSEYWARE 8th Grade Language Arts is available outside the classroom 24/7, enabling students to progress at a pace that matches their individual learning styles.
English Foundations II (2 semesters)
English Foundations II offers a year of skill building and strategy development in reading and writing. Semester one is a reading program designed to help struggling readers develop mastery in the areas of reading comprehension, vocabulary building, study skills, and media literacy. Semester two is a writing program which builds confidence in composition fundamentals by focusing on the areas of composing, grammar, style, and media literacy. Both semesters are structured around ten mini-units which offer interactive instruction and guided practice in each of the four learning strands. Students read for a variety of purposes and write for a variety of audiences.
Mathematics:
8th Grade Math (2 semesters)
Give your students the formula for algebraic success with Pre-Algebra. To prepare students for higher level algebra, the course introduces such significant math concepts as number relationships, variables, scientific notation, functions, integers, measurement, using formulas, and representing data. This interactive curriculum appeals to auditory, visual, and kinesthetic learners, delivering instruction through a variety of methods including online reading, audio clips, and dynamic games to reinforce key math concepts.
