6th Grade Course Curriculum

Language Arts:

Reading for a Purpose (2 semesters)

Interactive and innovative, 6th Grade Language Arts offers enriching lessons that guide students in their exploration of how written and spoken language affects the world around them. Through the examination of newspapers and propaganda, they will learn how communication devices can be used to persuade and evoke emotion. The course requires them to read with a purpose as they increase their vocabulary, study characters and their relationships, and search for specific information. More reading practice helps increase speed and understanding. Lessons introduce students to the use of literary devices such as metaphors and will examine the structure within written pieces as they study language patterns. The course challenges students to employ more complex verbs, increasing the clarity and creativity of their writing exercises, including essays and business communication.

Mathematics:

6th Grade Math (2 semesters)

From math facts to complex concepts, this comprehensive curriculum reviews the topics of whole numbers, decimals, fractions, and geometry. It doesn't stop there. In-depth study includes statistics and metrics. Hands-on exercises allow students plenty of time to practice online, and visually appealing illustrations help to explain more complicated numerical operations. With the addition of technology-based lessons, building a strong math foundation is easy.

Science:

Plants and Animal Behavior/Molecular Genetics

(2 semesters)

Students blast off on a journey of Internet-based learning with 6th Grade Science. Guided lessons teach the physical characteristics and behavior of matter with interactive activities, animated presentations, and informative resources that allow self-directed learning. Additional lessons in this class focus on the cosmos, the astral bodies that exist in the universe, and the relationship they have with planet Earth.
