Competing in Super Region 3, third-seeded Lander (10-5-1) will
play Peach Belt Conference rival and sixth-seeded Flagler College (9-6-3)
at 7 p.m., Friday, Nov. 15 at the Jeff May Complex. The Lander/Flagler
winner will face second-seeded Queens (N.C.) College (16-3) at 7 p.m.
Sunday, also at the May Complex..
In the other half of the bracket, the fourth-seeded Carson-Newman
(12-5)/fifth-seeded Anderson (12-6-3) winner will play at top-seeded
Limestone (15-3).
The winner of those two brackets will play at Rollins College in Winter Park, Fla., Nov. 23-24.
Lander met Peach Belt Conference rival Flagler once this season
when the Saints took a 2-1 decision on Oct. 19 in St. Augustine, Fla. The
Bearcats lead the all-time series 3-2-2 and is 1-0-1 against the Saints at
Greenwood. The two teams have met twice in the postseason, both times
in the Peach Belt Conference Tournament. They played to a 2-all draw in
the conference tournament championship match on Nov. 8, 2009, but
Lander won the penalty kick shootout 4-3. The next season (No. 5, 2010),
Flagler eliminated Lander in the conference tournament semifinal, 2-0.
Flagler, after reeling off six consecutive wins in October, has gone
1-3-1 in its last five matches. The Saints are led by second-team AllPeach Belt forward Zach Shanahan who has scored a team-high nine
goals. First-team midfielder Marco Warren has tallied seven goals and
four assists. His was Flagler’s entire offense in the season’s earlier meeting against Lander as he scored both goals.
The NCAA national semifinals and finals will be held Dec. 5th and
7th at Blanchard Woods Park in Evans, Ga. The Peach Belt Conference
will serve as the finals host for the second straight year.
Illic and Miles Named Capital One Academic All-Americans
Illija Ilic of Young Harris College and UNC Pembroke’s Sam Miles have both
been named Capital One Academic All-Americans by the College Sports
Information Directors of America (CoSiDA). Miles and Ilic become just the
fifth and sixth PBC men’s soccer players to ever receive this award. The
CoSiDA Academic-Americna honors are regarded as one of the most distinguished awards a student-athlete can receive. Miles was named to the
third team while Illic was named to the first team.
Ilic, a 6-foot-2 junior forward from Belgrade, Serbia, helped lead
Young Harris to its first-ever Peach Belt Conference title in 2013 as the
No. 3-ranked Mountain Lions finished the season at 16-2-0 overall and
9-0-0 in the Peach Belt. Ilic, who has scored in every match but three
this season, led the Peach Belt in goals (19) and points scored (44) and
seventh in assists (7). The 44 points are the highest season total for any
PBC player since 2005. Ilic, who is a two-time all-conference selection
after being named to the first team in 2013, was named the Player of the
Year in the Peach Belt in 2013. Ilic has scored 37 g
