District Characteristics
Tennessee Assessments
Number of schools – This is the number of schools
operating in each district for the current school year, as
reported on the Tennessee School Directory of Public
Schools.
Math or Reading Proficiency – This is the percentage of
students scoring proficient or advanced on TCAP math
and reading assessments in grades 3-8.. For the 2011-12
school year, 52 percent of students in Tennessee scored
proficient or advanced in math and 50 percent scored
proficient or advanced in reading in grades 3-8
Total students – This is the total count of students enrolled in each individual school district as of October 1,
according to the Tennessee State Report Card.
Percent White Students/Percent non-White Students
– This is the percentage of white and non-white (African
American, Hispanic, Asian, and Native American) students in each district according to the Tennessee State
Report Card. For the 2011-12 school year Tennessee
had 67.8 percent white students, 23.6 percent African
American students, 6.6 percent Hispanic students, 1.8
percent Asian students, and 0.2 percent Native American students.
