Pam first came to Kiawah as a visitor and knew immediately that the Island
was a special place. She became a scientist because of schooling and a photographer
as a result of her extraordinary training and study. Kiawah became her laboratory, her
inspiration, her challenge and above all, her home.
Pam is trained as a biologist and has had various jobs as a scientist. She has also
worked as a freelance photographer, taking pictures of everything from windows for a
manufacturer’s brochure to landscapes of her family’s beloved countryside in Italy. Her
quest for knowledge and the visual flashes that illuminate her photographs have taken
her to such disparate places as the renowned alligator farm in St. Augustine, Florida and
the Aeolian Islands, where she captured (at least by camera) an erupting volcano.
Pam’s desire to know more, see more, do more and give more of herself knows
no bounds. Her guiding principle, “nothing in moderation,” says it all. Her photographs
are showcased in homes and businesses throughout the Island and in a myriad of Island
publications.
Although Pam’s talent is formidable, her generosity of spirit and willingness to
share her gifts and enthusiasm are all the more so. She speaks and presents frequently at
Photo Club meetings. She also shoots photographs for and lectures at community events
through the Kiawah Conservancy or Our World presentations.
If you want to take a photograph on Kiawah Island, by all means, call Pam
to find just the right spot or backdrop to illuminate your photographs. Note that
forewarned is forearmed! If you call to ask for her insights as to where to take great
photographs, she will probably offer to take you to the prime spot(s) herself.
So the next time you see a woman with long curly hair and a huge camera
around her neck as she hurries to photograph a hummingbird before it disappears, be
sure to stop and wave. That woman is most likely Pamela Cohen and she will most likely
wave back to you, with a huge smile to signal her warmth and her wisdom.
