Weehawken artist Mary Ann Fernandez was inspired to open Gypsy Yogis after her local community yoga class was left homeless when the owner lost his lease . Fernandez , at the time an active member of the program , saw the potential of opening aspace that united the creative local community through art and yoga , her two favorite things . With the blessing of the program ’ soriginal organizer , she took over and opened Gyspy Yogis . In the first year , Fernandez got her teaching certification and was diagnosed with breast cancer .
