Entertaining Area
(Left) Originally constructed in 1892, the historic building was completely gutted to make
way for loft-style living spaces, some with 19-foot ceilings. For his 1,200-square-foot
apartment, Carrino opted for an open floor plan that allows natural light from the
building’s beautiful arched windows to flood the room. Original brickwork, steel beams
and a concrete floor lend an urban industrial vibe to the living space. A consummate
entertainer, Carrino anchored the dining area with a farm table by Restoration Hardware,
surrounded by Bombora fiberglass chairs by Timothy Oulton. Carrino seized the opportunity to mix metal and wood in the kitchen, contrasting warm wood veneers from old
gondola posts on the cabinets and refrigerator door with stainless appliances and a cool
blue backsplash of Heath Ceramics tiles. (Above) With its suspended hearth by Fireorb
and tweed-cushioned Z Space chairs by Dot & Bo, the living space exudes mid-century
modern style. A Chesterfield-style leather sofa by Timothy Oulton sits ato p a playful
over-dyed Wayfair rug. At the base of a decorative steel staircase leading to the sleeping
loft, the designer placed a pair of Scholar armchairs by Timothy Oulton. Wood shelves
from West Elm hold treasures from Carrino’s regular trips.
