bike ride can be an enjoyable
way to get some exercise
and explore your local
neighborhood, but for an
exciting, heart-pumping
alternative workout, more
and more fitness enthusiasts are turning
to group spin classes.
Spinning is a full-body workout that
revolves around specialized stationary
bicycles. With the help of an upbeat
musical playlist, instructors coach you
on when to speed up, stand up, or adjust
the level of resistance on your bike.
Riders are encouraged to visualize
pedaling as fast as they can in a bike race
or increasing the resistance to slowly climb
up a steep hill. That’s how spinning engages and sculpts
major muscle groups,
from your core to
your glutes, says
Dani Iannone, lead
instructor at Prime
Cycle in Hoboken.
“It’s more than
a workout – it’s an
experience,” Iannone
says. “Spinning is about the
fun of letting someone else guide you
through this 45-minute journey.”
Whether you’re a competitive cyclist or
are looking for a new way to torch calories,
build muscle, and improve your cardiovascular fitness, spinning is accessible for
people of all ages and fitness levels.
“Cycling is low impact; whether you’re
coming back from an injury or you’re just
getting started, it’s a workout that anyone
can do,” Iannone says. ◆
