he emerging trend of geode wedding
cakes may be a bit shocking to guests
accustomed to flowers, hearts and
delicate flourishes. Instead of traditional
embellishments, cake tiers are literally slashed
open to hold a crystallized sugar creation that’s
designed to look like one of nature’s most
beautiful rock formations.

Faris enjoys creating cakes that “are a little
outside the box” and embraced the geode
challenge, envisioning it for a creative couple.
“We wanted to make it super dramatic,” she says.
The geode’s core is made from white and muted
pink sugar crystals, and surrounded by black sugar
crystals. Parts of the black border were painted
with edible accents “so it looked lacquered,” Faris says.
“The white and pink crystals are luster dusted, so it’s muted
with a bit of shine.” The rim of the geode is hand-painted
with edible silver paint and silver leaf for extra dimension.
The resulting formation is set into a two-tier cake covered
in marbleized fondant in shades of white and gray.
