Lexical Approach

Purpose statement:

During this activity students will listen to a song and complete the lyrics of a song with the missing verbs.

Objective:

At the end of the lesson the students will be able to identify at least three out of the four action verbs presented in the song.

Materials and resources needed:

1) Speakers.

2)Video projector.

Description of activity:

1) The teacher presents a song called ‘’what can you do’’. The song is about actions that somebody can do (as swim, ride a bike, sing).

2)The teacher acts as a model, doing the mimics to the actions.

3)The students imitate him/her.

4)The teacher gives students a worksheet.

5)They have to fill the gaps with the missing verb while listening to the song.

6)Both students and the teacher sing the song together.

Reflexion:

This activity from the lexical approach is very useful for students to develop listening skills, one of the main goals of teaching a language is for students to understand it and feel comfortable with it, and listening to a song is a very didactic way of doing it. However, it is not easy to apply to a noisy crowd.

Level: first year of primary.
