1969 Voice Of The Tennessee Walking Horse 1969 September/October Voice RS | Page 4

"A brilliant performance under impossible condi tions” . . . this is what all observers said about the show made by EBONY’S SENATOR as he captured the coveted World Grand Championship at the 1969 Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration on Saturday, September 6 in Shelbyville, Tennessee. With veteran trainer Marvin Wilson in the saddle for new owner O. D. "Peck” Carlton of Albany, Georgia, "the SENATOR” did indeed become "president” as he stayed on the rail in half-darkness to take home the blue in a driving rainstorm. Riding out of the Vic Thompson Stables of Shelbyville, Tennessee, Mr. Wil son closed the twelve-year gap from 1957 when Vic himself rode SUN’S JET PARADE to victory in the same ring. There are several stories involved in this one epi sode of Walking Horse history. We could write one chapter about the horse, who has been shown consist ently throughout the season and entered the ring with a solid following. Another chapter could be written about the man who rode him — a man who has made a great reputation as a trainer and who has made EBONY'S SENATOR Sloshes to Victory with MARVIN WILSON in the Saddle!
