INDIANA ASSOCIATION SHOW ENDS SUCCESSFUL YEAR
by Gloria Cooley
The Indiana Walking Horse Association held its annual show on Sunday , September 21 at the Marion County Fairgrounds in Wanamaker , Indiana . This location has a great advantage for Walking Horses , for the ring is huge and no matter how large the classes were , there seemed to be plenty of room for everyone on the rail . The stabling facilities are also top-notch , and the hospitality of the Indiana Walking Horse people was just great .
Most of the work of organizing this show fell to Robert Bickham , President of the Association , and Mrs . Richard ( Dee ) Smith , Secretary-Treasurer . The show ran very smoothly during both the afternoon and evening performances , thanks to their efficient planning . They were assisted by the Association directors : Dr . J . F . Downing ; Raymond H . Smith ; Richard E . Smith ; Donn Perry ; Harold Hays ; David Kitley ; R . E . Sadler ; Leslie G . Hash ; George Case ; and Harold Civils . The trophies were outstanding , especially the challenge trophy in the Stake Class . The stake was won by GUNSMOKE ' S PRIDE , shown by Leonard Willis for Mr . and Mrs . Dean Marshall , Ipava , 111 . This big-striding black stallion made an outstanding show during the evening performance to top his class .
The juvenile riders in Indiana are an eager bunch of kids who know how to ride , and ride well . Jim Pearl made a faultless ride on ELDORADO ’ S BLACK LA BEL to win both the Walking Horse Amateur and the Amateur Stake . This mare has done some great winning during the past season . The Bob Lockes have a lovely two-year-old in BLACK JACK ' S SILVER , and this horse has a great future .
The show was judged by Herman Warren of Tennessee , who was very pleased with the large classes and the high quality of the entries . The complete results of the show can be found in the Horse Show Results section of this issue .

NORTH CENTRAL STATES WALKING HORSE BREEDERS ' FUTURITY & SHOW ROUNDS OUT SIXTH YEAR WITH ENTHUSIASM
October 4 started out as a dull , dark day , but by noon the weather had been affected by the high spirits of the crowd and it was a good day for the North Central States Walking Horse Breeders ’ Futurity and Show . The Livestock Pavilion on the campus at Michigan State University , East Lansing , was a beehive of activity as trailers with horses from Michigan and surrounding states were being unloaded .
Leo Barth of Brookside Farm Stable , Freeport , was show chairman , and he had good help . Don Hanson , announcer ( assisted by his daughter-in-law ), farrier Lloyd Shepard , veterinarian David Gregg ( now at Rogers City , but relocating within the next few weeks to Hastings ), ringmaster Glen Harmon , photographer Roger Buxton , and many , many others helped to make the show ' the very best ’ in the six years of its existence .
The crowd was enthusiastic and everyone seemed to find no fault with the judge — David Mason from Murfreesboro , Tennessee .
The highlight of the show was the presentation of the Victor Bucknell Challenge Trophy by Margaret Bucknell to Del Rush , Jr ., on the Brass Forging Company Stable entry , LIMOUSINE ’ S WARRIOR .
Results of the show can be found in the Horse Show Results section of this issue .
