MISSOURI WALKING HORSE NEWS
by LINDA SCRIVNER Rt. 2 Rogersville, Mo.
Walking Horse fever has struck Missouri right along with the flu. Both new and old enthusiasts are preparing for the 1969 season, which isn’ t so far away. All of the Tennessee Walking Horse stables in our area are full, and all the young stock seems to be of top caliber.
I was very pleased to receive a letter from Fred Lesh, President of the Tennessee Walking Horse Pleasure Club of Missouri. Mr. Lesh said that he and other members of the club enjoyed my news in the VOICE and he sent me some news of their organization. Every spring this club has a Walking Horse Round- Up. On February 15, they held a meeting at which the time and place of the 1969 Spring Round-Up was decided. This dinner meeting was held in the Gold Room of the Hub City Restaurant in Ellington, Mo. at 7:30. Those interested in further information regarding the club and the Round-Up should contact the Secretary, Mrs. Betty Santens, P. O. Box 92, Doe Run, Missouri. We hope to have more information on this in the VOICE, also. I would like to wish the best of luck to this group and to say that Walking Pleasure Horses should be promoted more as this group is doing. I’ ve always heard— and said— " To ride one is to own one " and that " the Tennessee Walking Horse is the world’ s greatest pleasure horse.’’
The Southwest Missouri Horse Show Association recently held their annual awards dinner. This Association has divisions for each breed as well as Walking Horse divisions. Therefore, I was very pleased that a Walking Horse won the high-point trophy over all divisions. KEETER’ S PIN-UP and owner Bill Pickering, Jr. of Rogersville won both the Amateur Division and the high-point award. This beautiful sorrel stallion and Bill are always favorites among the crowd and this season they amassed a total of twelve blues.
The election of officers was also featured. Rex P Kreider, well-known and well-loved horseman, was elected president for the coming year; Bill Pickering
Jr. was chosen vice president. Secretary-treasurer Mrs. Evelyn Stone did such an outstanding job that
she was once again given this position. Four new members were elected to the board. They were: Carl Piper, Ash Grove; Lester Wilkerson, Ash Grove; Dr. Carlson, Springfield; and Otho Bridges, Republic. Retiring board members were O. L. Hall, Dale Sharpe and Dorrel Hanks. These men have all done exceptional jobs, as did the president for 1968, Bill Kissee of Ozark. Members remaining on the board are Howard Creed, Roy Cooper, Boy Bailey, Chester Beshears, Janet Green and Dwayne Crighton.
There were a number of ties this year from the points accumulated at 11 point shows. In the Juvenile Walking Horse Class, there was a tie between SHAD- RACK’ S SHADOW and Linda Fisher of Springfield, and SHADOWS GREY GHOST and Glenda Campbell of Ozark. Second award went to MACK’ S GO BOY
and Mike Stone. SUN’ S BIG BOY and Ronnie Kissee were third, and fourth was won by SMOKY and Edwina Potts for owner Lundy Mack.
The Two-Year-Old Walking Horse division was won by MACK K’ S BLACK CHANCE for Morris Collier. Second went to NIGHT TRAIN’ S CABOOSE and Ed Potts. Third place was a tie: NIGHT TRAIN’ S GO GIRL for Lester Wilkerson, and REBEL’ S SECRET AGENT, owned by John Kissee. COMMANDER’ S SUNDUST and Howard Creed were fourth.
In the Junior Division, the ever-popular POSTMARK captured the championship for L & J Stables of Kansas City. MERRY BELLE’ S JUNE, for Mr. and Mrs. Francis Dulin, was second. GO BOY’ S PLAYMAKER and C. L. LeDuc tied with BLACK ACE and Bob Bailey for third, and fourth was another tie: MAGIC ACE for Joe Blades and GO BOY’ S MARK for Frances Carpenter. MOONLIGHT GAMBLER and Joe Blades won fifth.
KEETER’ S PINUP and Bill Pickering were followed in the amateur class by MIDNIGHT JET and O. L. Hall. Third went to SUN’ S ROCKAWAY BOMBER and Herbert Mouse. ROCKY HILL and Morris Collier were fourth, with fifth being a tie between PIDDLEY’ S BLACK ACE and Bob Bailey, and SHADOW’ S GREY GHOST and Glenda Campbell.
The Open Walking Horse Division was won by O. L. Hall’ s DARK MOTION MAKER. Second went to GO BOY’ S BONANZA and C. L. LeDuc. A tie for third: MIDNIGHT BLUE for L & J Stables and DANNY GO GIRL for A. A. Rieke. A fourth-place tie was between MACK K’ S PRINCE for Francis Dulis and LIMOUS INE’ S DELIGHT for George McCrosky. Fifth award went to PIDDLEY’ S BLACK ACE for Bob Bailey.
Two sportsmanship awards were given. The girls’ award was won by Beverly Windle who shows a pleasure Walking Horse. The boys’ trophy was won by Tommy Carlson.
