feel that Dr . Owen has an unusually close contact with the rank-and-file members of the Walking Horse community and is genuinely interested in the future of our breed and this
Association . We are confident that he , too , will continue to be an asset to our Association .
" ONCE UPON A TIME . .
Robert S . Krabbenhoft of Scottsville , Kentucky , told us the beginning of what might one day be a very interesting story .
Mr . and Mrs . Krabbenhoft attended the recent Hengen-Lenox Sale in Shelbyville , Tennessee , and bought two mares , one with a foal by her side and the other in foal to SCAT- MAN . Bob had planned to take them back to Kentucky on Sunday , and his inspection of the pregnant mare on Friday led him to believe that
she was not quite ready to foal , so he decided to leave her in the rather
small stall overnight . This was a bad decision , as she foaled during the night and apparently stepped on and broke the leg of the new black stud colt .
Mrs . Krabbenhoft , not being the type to give up easily , ignored the advice to destroy the foal and engaged the services of Dr . Ed Perryman , who inserted a pin in the colt ’ s leg and constructed an ingenious crutch . He admired the colt , and , as Bob wasn ’ t looking forward to transporting and caring for the little fellow , Dr . Perryman ended up the
owner of a slightly damaged , but well bred , colt .
Bob says he hopes his new-found friend , Dr . Perryman , can raise the colt and have him develop into a real success . . . very sorry beginning notwithstanding !
ALABAMA . . . ALL THE WAY The horse shows have started in Alabama and Mobile had a good show sponsored by the Sheriff ’ s Posse . Don Bell of Fayetteville , Tennessee judged the Walking Horse classes .
The Walking Horse Stake was won by GO BOY ' S CADILLAC JEWEL , with Jimmy Ellis up for Ellis Farms , Orrville . The Three-Year-Old Stallion Class was won by BALLY HOO ’ S APOLLO with Billy Brantley up for Slocum & Doughty of Mobile . In the Walking Pony Class , the top spot went to FREDDIE THE FREELOAD ER with Ty Irby up . In the Junior
Class , HANDSHAKER ’ S RED ACE captured the top spot , giving Jimmy Ellis two blues to carry home . This horse is owned by Mrs . Lyman Phillips of Brewton .
Complete results of this show can be found in the Show Results section of this issue .
The big event that everyone looked forward to was the exhibition of the
current World Champion Walking Pony , SETTING SUN ’ S APOLLO ,
with Lynn Doughty riding . APOLLO has been resting and getting fat for the last two months , and he and Lynn showed what good rest can do , making a flawless exhibition . Trainer Billy Brantley said they plan to retire APOLLO this year .
APOLLO has his first colt on the ground , and he is an exact replica of his famous sire down to the white mane and tail .
