COLUMBIANA, ALABAMA STAGES TOP SHOW
" Bigger and better " is the best way to describe the Sixth Annual Heart of the Heart of Dixie Horse Show, held April 26 at Columbiana, Alabama.
In a town erf less than 2,500 citizens, over 3,500 paid to watch 424 horses from seven states compete in the 38 classes of the show.
Sanctioned by the Alabama Horseman’ s Association and rated a class A A show, the Heart of the Heart of Dixie Horse Show is sponsored by the Shelby County High School Athletic Club. This show has completely paid for the school’ s new football stadium in three years.
Leon Kelly, General Chairman and head of a show committee of ninety members, said, " In addition to the fine adult exhibitors wTho show here each year, we strongly solicit young horsemen to participate in our show.’’ The first six classes of the show’ are limited to 4-H’ ers. Shelby County had one of the first 4-H horse programs in Alabama. Their program has been copied in many counties in the state.
Kenny Price of Thomasville, North Carolina judged the Walking Horses. Leonard Crotts of High Point, North Carolina was the emcee.
Molly Walker of Forestdale took first place in the Walking Pleasure 1 Class on her SNOWMAN. Ken Kirch- i ler of Hueytown won the blue ribbon \ with his walking pony, MISTER AVENGER. The Juvenile Walking Horse Class was won by Mike Hilley riding CITY BOY for Jimmy Manos of Gadsden.

HANDSHAKER’ S RID-ALL, ridden by Jimmy Ellis for Mrs. Lymon Phillips of Brewton, took it all in the Four-Year-Old Class. Jimmy Hicks on BLUE’ S MARY DOLL, owned by Dr. Harry Blaylock of Birmingham, won the Aged Walking Mare Class.
David Bledsoe wrapped up the show by winning the big one in the Aged Walking Horse Stallion and Gelding Class with SKIP’ S GO BOY, owned by Dr. and Mrs. O. Hugh Chitwood of Fort Payne.

COOLEY GETS HORSE AS SURGERY FEE

SARGENT, Neb.-( AP)— Dr. Denton A. Cooley performed open
heart surgery on 23-month-old Kinsy Byam. The infant is now recuperating at Children’ s hospital and may be home in 10 days.
The Houston, Tex. heart surgeon’ s fee: a registered walking ' horse.
Dr. Robert Westbrook of Sargent, the family physician, said he will donate the mare because the Byams thought their daughter was covered by insurance but found she was not. He said, " I asked Dr. Cooley what to do with the horse when it arrives in Houston. He told me just to park it in front of the hospital, and he would come and get it.”
